New Delhi: Indian Railways has introduced a new luggage policy in 2025 to provide clear regulations for passengers regarding their luggage. This policy sets free luggage limits for various train classes and imposes charges for excess luggage, aiming to ensure a smooth and transparent travel experience for passengers. Indian Railways has defined free luggage limits based on the class of travel. The luggage limits for 2025 are as follows: AC First Class (1A): 70 kg per adult passenger, with a maximum limit of 150 kg; AC 2-Tier (2A): 50 kg per adult passenger, with a maximum limit of 100 kg; AC 3-Tier (3A): 40 kg per adult passenger, with a maximum limit of 80 kg; Sleeper Class (SL): 40 kg per adult passenger, with a maximum limit of 80 kg; Second Class (2S): 35 kg per adult passenger, with a maximum limit of 70 kg. For luggage exceeding the free limit, Indian Railways will impose charges based on the class of travel and distance: AC First Class: ₹30 to ₹50 per kg, with a minimum charge of ₹100; AC 2-Tier: ₹25 to ₹40 per kg, with a minimum charge of ₹75; AC 3-Tier: ₹20 to ₹35 per kg, with a minimum charge of ₹50; Sleeper Class: ₹15 to ₹30 per kg, with a minimum charge of ₹30; Second Class: ₹10 to ₹20 per kg, with a minimum charge of ₹20. Excess luggage charges must be paid at the luggage counter at the railway station. Failure to purchase a luggage ticket will result in a penalty of six times the applicable charge. For example, 10 kg of excess luggage in Sleeper Class without a ticket will incur a penalty of ₹180 (₹30 x 6).The size of luggage must not exceed 100 cm (length) x 60 cm (width) x 25 cm (height). Larger luggage will require special charges or transportation in the brake van. Carrying explosives, inflammable materials, hazardous chemicals, and illegal items is strictly prohibited. This luggage policy will be strictly enforced at all railway stations, with railway staff checking the weight and size of luggage. To raise awareness about these rules, the railway department will disseminate information through digital media, posters at stations, and the IRCTC website. The department has advised passengers to check their luggage weight in advance and purchase luggage tickets if necessary. The IRCTC mobile app also offers the facility to pay luggage charges online.This new luggage policy will help reduce overcrowding on trains and make luggage transportation more organized. However, some passengers have raised concerns about the additional charges, particularly for long-distance travelers.
