Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, aged 67, is a senior BJP leader with roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He represented Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, twice in the Lok Sabha and has also served as Tamil Nadu BJP President.

Former Maharashtra Governor and NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, securing a decisive victory with 452 first-preference votes. Opposition candidate, Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, received 300 votes. Out of 767 total votes, 752 were valid. The election was necessitated after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, 2025, due to health reasons. Over the years, he has held several key posts including Governor of Jharkhand (2023–2024), Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, and most recently, Governor of Maharashtra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a leader who “rose from adversity, with a political journey of over 40 years, focused on rural development and minority empowerment.”

Election Background

The NDA announced Radhakrishnan as its Vice Presidential candidate on August 17, 2025, and he filed his nomination on August 20 in the presence of PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. On polling day, 96% of MPs cast their votes, with PM Modi being among the first. The NDA enjoyed the support of 425 MPs, including 11 from YSR Congress Party, while parties like BJD, BRS, and SAD abstained.

Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Radhakrishnan on X (Twitter): "Your wisdom in leadership and governance will strengthen parliamentary democracy."
