The Karnataka government has announced a significant compensation package for farmers whose land will be submerged under the Upper Krishna Project-3, marking a major victory after decades of protests. Following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, it was decided that farmers will receive ₹30 lakh per acre for dry land and ₹40 lakh per acre for irrigated and agricultural land. This decision comes after several rounds of negotiations with farmers failed. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the project requires a total of 1.33 lakh acres of land for submergence, canal construction, and rehabilitation. This will lead to the submergence of 20 villages, with an estimated project cost of ₹70,000 crore. He added that the project will provide water and greatly benefit the farmers. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar hailed the decision as "historic," saying the government is committed to "giving a new shape to the lives of farmers." The project is set to acquire approximately 1,33,867 acres of land, with over 75,000 acres expected to be submerged. It will provide irrigation to more than five lakh hectares of land. A tribunal has already given its verdict to raise the height of the dam from 519.6 meters to 524.256 meters.
