India has a significant number of people who believe in God, and accordingly, there are numerous temples across the country. Consequently, the number of devotees visiting temples and offering donations is also substantial. The amount of donations collected in India is quite high.

Specifically, the Supreme Court stated on Tuesday that the money offered by devotees to temples should be used for initiatives like education and medical institutions, not for constructing marriage halls. The Tamil Nadu government had announced plans to use ₹80 crore from devotees’ donations to build marriage halls in 27 temples across the state and rent them out. The Madras High Court, after hearing the petition, ruled that devotees’ donations cannot be used for commercial purposes. However, this ruling was challenged through a petition filed in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld the Madras High Court’s decision. The court questioned the purpose of temples, stating, “If marriage parties are held within temple premises with vulgar songs being played, is that the purpose of a temple?” It opined that devotees’ money should be used for noble causes like education and healthcare.
