This order has been challenged through public interest litigations (PILs) filed by the Karnataka Vokkaliga Sangha, Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, senior advocate and former MLA K.N. A division bench led by Justice Anu Sivaraman heard these petitions on Friday, September 19. The court issued notices to all respondents, including the Central Government, State Government, State Backward Classes Commission, Central Census Authority, and Census Registrar. After hearing arguments for some time, the bench deferred the hearing and issued notices to the respondents.
Simultaneously, another petition challenging the same order, filed by Lingaraj Chapparadalli from Hirekerur in Haveri district, was taken up by a bench led by Justice B.M. Shyam Prasad on the same day. Due to the absence of the state’s Advocate General, the court stated that the petitioners’ interim request for a stay on the survey would also be considered on September 22. Advocate Prabhuling Navadagi, representing petitioner Udayshankar, argued that the Commission should not claim the survey has already begun, as it would be difficult to reverse the process once started.
Advocate Prof. Ravivarma Kumar, representing the Commission, informed the court that survey forms had already been distributed to two crore families. However, advocates representing Subbareddy argued that the survey is set to begin on September 22 and urged the court to direct the Commission to halt the survey until the petitions are resolved.Dharmasthala Skull Case...
