The BJP argued that including these castes in the survey could encourage religious conversions, a claim that sparked significant controversy in recent political discourse.The Commission, set to commence its second socio-educational survey on September 22, had initially included these 46 castes among a list of 1,413.
The inclusion drew attention during the survey announcement, prompting a strong reaction from BJP leaders. In a press conference, Commission Chairman Madhusudhan R. Nayak stated that while five of the 38 Christian groups would remain, 33 others would be "masked" and removed from the survey app. However, BJP leader V. Commission Secretary K.A. Dayanand confirmed that seven sub-castes had already been removed earlier.The BJP’s campaign played a pivotal role, with leaders like State President B.Y. Vijayendra, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, and Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna leading efforts through the Social Justice Awareness Forum.
They submitted a memorandum to the Commission Chairman, demanding the removal of these castes. On September 2, they urged the exclusion of 107 such caste names, arguing that these were not part of any official caste list and were a ploy to normalize conversions.
