Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit, acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has been promoted to the rank of Colonel by the Indian Army. After a 17-year legal battle, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court acquitted Purohit and six other accused on July 31.

This promotion marks a new chapter in Purohit’s professional career.On September 29, 2008, a bomb explosion in Malegaon, Maharashtra, killed six people and injured 101. The blast was triggered by a bomb placed on a motorcycle. Investigative agencies alleged that he facilitated funding for arms and explosives and organized meetings. It was also claimed that he procured RDX explosives from Kashmir and stored them at his residence.The court acquitted him due to a lack of evidence and the inability to substantiate suspicions. Purohit spent nine years in jail and had argued in the Supreme Court that he was wrongfully implicated for political reasons.
