The death penalty has been suspended for two years, with the court noting Tang’s admission of guilt. From 2007 to 2024, Tang held various high-ranking positions and amassed 26.8 million yuan in cash and assets through bribes. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) expelled Tang in November 2024, following an investigation by the anti-graft watchdog that led to his removal from the ministerial post three months earlier. Prior to his role as Agriculture Minister, Tang served as Governor of Gansu Province from 2017 to 2020.

The court stated that Tang’s actions caused significant harm to China’s governance system, though his cooperation led to a mitigated sentence. After the two-year suspension, Tang’s sentence may be commuted to life imprisonment or another penalty, but the verdict sends a strong message about the CCP’s stringent anti-corruption stance.
