Vasudeva Krishna who attacked Kashi city! What was the reason..?

In the epic sprawl of the Mahabharata, if one seeks the cradle of its most pivotal characters, the answer invariably points to Kashi ancient Varanasi, the eternal city of Shiva.

In the epic sprawl of the Mahabharata, if one seeks the cradle of its most pivotal characters, the answer invariably points to Kashi ancient Varanasi, the eternal city of Shiva. This connection is no mere coincidence but a foundational thread woven into the saga's very fabric.

It begins with the indomitable Bhishma, who, in a bid to secure a legacy for his half-brother Vichitravirya, stormed the swayamvara of Kashi's princesses and abducted the three radiant sisters: Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika. Daughters of the noble Kashiraja, they became unwitting architects of destiny.ANNI DESIGNER | Rayon Anarkali Printed Kurta Pant Dupatta Set | Stylish Cotton Kurti Set for Women | Ethnic Co-ord Suit Set with Dupatta Festive Kurta Sets for Women

Ambika bore Dhritarashtra, the blind patriarch whose sons, the Kauravas, would ignite the flames of Kurukshetra. Ambalika, in turn, gave life to Pandu, father of the noble Pandavas, whose valor defined the epic's heroic core. Amba's tragic quest for vengeance against Bhishma herself sowed the seeds of the great war.

Thus, from Kashi's royal hearth sprang the bloodlines that would clash in the cataclysm of dharma.Yet, Kashi's role in the Mahabharata extends beyond lineage to divine intervention. Also Read: Another Successful Step by ISRO: 'Bahubali' LVM3 Rocket Launches CMS-03 This Evening!

In a lesser-known but thunderous chapter from the Puranas echoed in the Vishnu and Bhagavata traditions Lord Vasudeva Krishna, the divine strategist of the Pandavas, unleashed his wrath upon the city not long after quelling greater threats like Jarasandha, but well before the Kurukshetra fray.

The culprit? King Paundraka Vasudeva, a deceitful sovereign of Pundra who audaciously donned the peacock feather and conch of Krishna, proclaiming himself the true incarnation of Vishnu. Blinded by arrogance and envy fueled by his alliance with the tyrannical Kashiraja (Sudhanva in some accounts) Paundraka forged a demonic pact, unleashing a fiery "Agnikritya" spirit to raze Dwarka, Krishna's sacred abode. Also Read: New Record in Vehicle Sales in India: Highest Level in October 2025!

Enraged yet ever-just, Krishna countered with his invincible Sudarshana Chakra, a whirling disc of cosmic retribution. It first incinerated the Kritya mid-assault, then beheaded the impostor Paundraka and his Kashi ally in their opulent halls.

Unquenched, the chakra's blaze swept through Varanasi's streets, reducing palaces and fortifications to smoldering ruinsa purifying inferno that spared the innocent but scorched the seats of wickedness. Also Read: IRCTC Fined ₹25,000 by Delhi Consumer Court for Serving Worm-Infested Food!

Though no scrolls detail every spark, scholars attribute this to Paundraka's treachery and his patron's complicity, a stark reminder that even Kashi's sanctity could not harbor deceit against the divine.

In the aftermath, the city rose phoenix-like, its survival a testament to the illusion of unchecked sovereignty, where false empires crumble under the weight of their own hubris.Through epochs, Kashi has traversed dynasties and dominions from the bridal chambers of its princesses to the ashes of Krishna's judgment enduring as a nexus of power, piety, and peril. Today, ensnared in the crosscurrents of faith and factionalism, it stirs echoes of these ancient tempests, urging us to honor its resilient spirit amid modern divides. In the city's undying ghats, the Ganges whispers: History's lessons are not chains, but lanterns for harmony.
