17,561 Cases, 1 City: The High Cost of Being High-Tech.

Bangalore has once again proved to be the cradle of the cybercrime. The National Crime Records Bureau released its "Crime in India 2024" report on May 6, 2026, confirming that Bengaluru remains the cybercrime capital of India, accounting for more than half of all cases reported across major metropolitan cities. While the city witnessed a peripheral dip in cases compared to the previous year, its dominance in this category remains undisputed.

Total Cases amounting to 17,561 Bangalore alone accounts to 50% of the total 34,958 cybercrimes reported across all 19 major metropolitan cities in India. The city recorded a shocking 206.6 cases per lakh population, the highest in the country.

Significant cases of 17,310 were computer-related offences. particularly, 16,657 cases involved "cheating by impersonation" using computer resources and the fraud was the primary driver, identified in 16,842 cases.

Karnataka remains highest volume of cybercrime registrations among all Indian states.

21,993 cases in 2024 (a "tiny increase" from 21,889 in 2023). Roughly 80% of all cybercrimes in Karnataka originate from Bengaluru. The state’s charge-sheeting rate stood at 22.1%, while the cybercrime rate was 32.2 per lakh population.

While Bangalore has registered 17,561 cases, Mumbai has 4939 cases, Hyderabad has registered 4009 cases.

Nationwide, cybercrime saw an 18% upsurge, rising from 86,420 cases in 2023 to 1,01,928 cases in 2024.

Despite the high volume of new cases, Bengaluru is stressed with a backlog, with over 14,000 cases pending from previous years. In 2024, nearly 14,000 cases were closed due to "insufficient evidence" or inability to trace the accused.
