February 21 – International Mother Language Day

Where did International Mother Language Day originate? Why is this particular day celebrated as International Mother Language Day? What is its significance?

Everyone's mother tongue is very dear and important to them. Just as we express our love and pride for our language through the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations, International Mother Language Day is celebrated to honor and respect the language that each individual has spoken since birth.

The celebration of International Mother Language Day first began in Bangladesh. The proposal to celebrate this day was first made during the Bengali Language Movement in East Bengal in 1952.

There are more than 7,100 languages across the world. In India, the language changes every 15–20 kilometers. To respect and honor all these languages, UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day in 1992. The United Nations also officially recognized this day.
