Relentless Monsoon Fury in Karnataka: All Schools in Udupi Declared Holiday

Heavy rainfall continues to batter Karnataka, severely impacting coastal and Malnad districts, including Udupi, Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada. In response, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Uttara Kannada, and an orange alert for Hassan, Kodagu, and other districts.

Udupi: Heavy rainfall continues to batter Karnataka, severely impacting coastal and Malnad districts, including Udupi, Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada. Due to the intense rainfall, all schools, anganwadis, and PU colleges in Udupi district have been declared closed on August 19, 2025. The heavy rainfall has disrupted road traffic in coastal Karnataka, particularly in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, with several areas experiencing waterlogging. In Hassan district, landslides triggered by heavy rain in Shiradi Ghat have obstructed the Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway 75. Large amounts of soil and rocks have collapsed onto the road in Kappalli, Sakleshpur, severing connectivity. The heavy rainfall has significantly impacted agricultural lands in Hassan and Udupi. Water levels in the Krishna River’s tributaries, Hemavati and Yagachi, have risen, submerging farmlands. Farmers are facing the threat of damage to crops like paddy, coffee, and others. The Udupi district administration has declared holidays for schools, anganwadis, and colleges and issued warnings to fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. Hassan’s District Collector, Lathakumari, has announced school holidays in Sakleshpur, Belur, and Alur taluks and instructed the public to avoid riverbanks. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster management teams are on standby for emergencies. District administrations have set up temporary relief camps, distributing food, medicines, and other essentials in affected areas. Rescue teams are working to provide aid to villages cut off from road connectivity in Hassan. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is monitoring the state’s rainfall situation and has directed district collectors to provide immediate relief to affected individuals. The heavy rainfall has impacted public transportation in Hassan and Udupi, and passengers have been advised to avoid low-lying areas and riverbanks.
